The angry horse reared back, nearly launching its lightweight rider through the air. Turns out the bronc wasn’t particularly happy for the intrusion. April wasn’t happy either, as she immediately regretted her decision. It was a foolish move to get on the thing. She’d never even been on a broken, saddled horse. But there she was, trying to last eight seconds like it was some damned rodeo. She was trying to show off. The talkative cowboy they called Roger had been more than happy to help her climb aboard. His buddies were encouraging, too. She should have listened to the handsome one. He had warned her.
Roger and his pals weren’t bad looking. They certainly paid her plenty of attention, which she was grateful for. But they weren’t in the same league as the quiet fella. He was a gentleman, too. While Roger and his buddies stood there doubled over in laughter, the handsome one effortlessly jumped the fence of the corral and attempted to grab the reins. He didn’t make it in time. April flew through the air and landed on the hard dirt with a painful thud. Shockwaves of pain reverberated through her entire body. She’d hurt her wrist bad. She could already tell it was more than just bruised.
“Can you walk?” he asked as he knelt down eye level.
Her pride was hurting worse than her body. He’d been the one she was hoping to impress.
“I think. It’s my wrist more than my legs. It hurts!”
He nodded knowingly.
“I’m going to pick you up and carry you to my truck. We need to get you into town to see Doc Childers.”
April simply nodded.
Soon, she was in his arms. He had picked her up so easily. She had known he was strong just by looking at him. His powerful shoulders, bulging chest, and muscular biceps were evident through the dark blue t-shirt he wore. He tapered off toward his trim waist. His well-worn blue jeans framed his muscular and perfect butt, which April had noticed quickly. Now that she was pressed against him, she was in heaven. She had even forgotten about the pain. She felt her heart race as she laid her head on his rock-hard pecs. She knew what the back of those jeans held, but she couldn’t help but wonder what he was packing up front. He was the portrait of the great American cowboy lean, rugged, tan from laboring in the sun each day, with calloused hands from the unending hard work. His charcoal hair matched his intensely dark eyes, but the black Stetson he wore covered most of it. The days’ worth of stubble that adorned his square granite jaw completed the picture, and sent April over the edge. She could feel herself melting in his powerful embrace.
And so begins their journey...
